Stroll through any market in the Southeast Asian nation of Laos and you’ll come across a woman selling this simple dessert of sticky rice, coconut milk and plantain steamed in banana leaves. Khao Dome is love at first bite. Once you get the hang of cooking the rice and folding the banana leaves, you’ll be itching to make these on a regular basis. Use a plantain (a giant banana sold in Asian, Latin and many regular grocers) with a significant amount of black on its skin so it’s more sweet than starchy. Sticky white rice is also called glutinous white rice. Despite its name, it is naturally gluten free.
