Apple Butter

Apple butter is nothing more than applesauce that’s been sweetened, spiced and reduced to a spreadable consistency. While it takes several hours of simmering, the homemade flavor is worth the time.

2½ cups apple puree or unsweetened applesauce
¾ cup pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground cloves
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1. Combine all ingredients in a non-aluminum medium saucepan.

2. Bring mixture to a low boil over medium heat, stirring frequently.

3. Reduce heat to low and simmer until mixture thickens and is a medium-brown color, about 2 hours. Stir every 15 to 20 minutes.

4. Remove from heat and let cool. Store in a covered glass jar in the refrigerator until used.
