Coffee wouldn’t leave his paws alone. Every night, the 4-year-old black Labrador chewed them until they were bleeding. No matter how many times owner Scott Wahlen of Park Ridge, Illinois, woke and tried to distract Coffee from this behavior, the dog would go right back to it. Before long, Coffee began licking and scratching his belly, too. Taking a closer look, Wahlen saw the dog’s stomach was getting discolored and developing strange bumps, along with very crusty skin. Wahlen knew it was time to get Coffee some help—the itching was driving them both crazy. After a trip to the vet and a series of allergy tests, Coffee was diagnosed with Canine Atopic Dermatitis (CAD), a skin irritation caused by allergies.
