Funding Food Allergy Research

There is significant need for more research on food allergies, says Wesley Burks, M.D., chief of the division of pediatric allergy and immunology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) has been working to bring research money to the field. Since the organization was founded in 1991, its research program has evolved from funding data-gathering studies (laying the foundation for accurate food allergy statistics, such as prevalence and incidence rates) to funding studies to find treatment or cure. In 2008, FAAN’s research budget, which is funded by member donations, was $1.4 million. It’s not enough.
