My gluten-free son is allergic to chocolate. What can I use as a substitute for cocoa powder? Carob powder is a great substitute for cocoa. Use it as a direct one-for-one replacement. Read labels carefully, however, and be certain to select unsweetened carob powder. Some sweetened carob products include barley malt, which contains gluten.
