Cool Finds for Food-Allergic Kids
It’s hot outside—but my children aren’t complaining. My 2-year-old has vanilla ice cream dripping down her face, hands, arms and shirt. My 7-year-old son sits next to her, happily licking his ice cream and giggling with his sticky sister. Me? I just can’t stop humming that old Van Halen tune, “Ice Cream Man.” The sheer joy of watching my children enjoy pushup pops has me singing “… all flavors and pushups, too!”
Unlike other families in my neighborhood, my summer is not filled with sprints to the ice cream truck or visits to the ice cream parlor. We don’t stroll down the frozen dessert aisle in the grocery store either. All these summertime traditions spell danger for my son Joseph, who is severely allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, milk, egg and soy.
But this summer, Joseph can savor pushup pops for the first time, thanks to Jokari Cool Cones. This pushup gadget is wonderful. It’s easy to scoop our homemade ice cream into the colorful pops and enjoy! I’m so excited to give my son the chance to experience a little slice of ice-cream-truck joy.
Another find this summer is our own version of Magic Shell. This is Joseph’s favorite. I drizzle melted Enjoy Life Foods chocolate chips over dairy-free ice cream and it instantly hardens into a yummy, chocolate shell. The other night, we had it as a topping on our homemade brownie sundaes. The magic of the hardening chocolate is pretty cool to a 7-year-old boy.
We don’t focus on the things Joseph can’t have, like the frozen desserts from the ice cream truck. Instead we delight in the treats he can safely enjoy. The little things we discover add extra fun and flavor to our summer time. My children’s smiles make it worth it. Now, if only I could get that song out of my head!
