Get Tested!

I've spent five years - yes, five years! - trying to get my family members tested for celiac disease. After I was diagnosed with the condition in 2005, I urged my mom, dad and two brothers to get tested. (Approximately 10 percent of first-degree relatives are affected.) I made a point of talking up how much better I felt gluten free, cooking great gluten-free foods and maintaining a really positive attitude. But no one got tested. A Gluten-Free Quandary

This week, I read about a supposed chef in Colorado who posted on his Facebook page that gluten free is "all in our disturbed little heads." Then he said, “People ask me for gluten-free pasta in my restaurant all the time. I tell em, 'sure.' Then I serve em our pasta, which I make from scratch with high gluten flour. And you know what? Nothing. NOTHING ever happens! People leave talking about how good they feel gluten free and guess what? They just had a full dose! Idiots!" This story is all over the Internet. Can you imagine anyone saying this about a serious illness? The chef has wisely retreated into his gluten-filled cave and removed his Facebook page entirely. This year, the Expo, held for three days in Anaheim, California, was bigger and busier than ever. Are You Gluten Sensitive?

When Living Without began publishing over 12 years ago, the concept of "gluten sensitivity" outside the diagnostic criteria of celiac disease did not exist. Either you had celiac disease—or you didn't. There was no such thing as non-celiac gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity. Even five years ago, establishing credibility for a case of non-celiac gluten sensitivity was an uphill climb. At the time, I was a psychotherapist working in private practice and in a local hospital. I had several patients with celiac symptoms--"touchy" stomach, anemia and accompanying mood disorders of anxiety and depression. I always urged these patients to get screened for celiac disease--and then held my breath as we waited for the results. What if the blood test was negative? What then? Should I suggest an endoscopy? Should I recommend a trial period of gluten-free eating? Back then, no celiac expert would support this approach. All this was fresh on my mind when medical writer Christine Boyd told me she's set to interview the lead author of a new study recently published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.   More...
